Rodger Saffold, G, Los Angeles Rams

Right now, protecting Jimmy Garoppolo should be one of the 49ers’ top priorities. Especially with the franchise quarterback coming off a torn ACL, it’s going to be imperative that they provide him with the best front five possible.

One way to do that would be to make an upgrade at guard. Laken Tomlinson has been okay as the starting left guard this season, but San Francisco could certainly use an upgrade as we head into 2019. That’s why the 49ers need to be interested in Rodger Saffold.

Arguably one of the NFL’s best and most underrated blockers, Saffold is set to hit the open market this offseason. Although it’s unclear if he intends to test the market or stay with the Los Angeles Rams, the 49ers need to be one of the first teams to contact him when the flood gates open in March. Why? Because he’d be a huge improvement for Garoppolo’s pass protection.

A sturdy, reliable presence for the Rams, Saffold has shined both as a run and pass blocker. Sporting excellent punch at the point of attack, tremendous technique and enough athleticism to make an impact as a puller, he pretty much does it all. You certainly can’t say the same about Tomlinson.

Saffold won’t come cheap as arguably the best offensive lineman available in 2019, but who cares in a dream scenario?
