San Francisco 49ers: And with the first pick in the 2019 Draft, they select…

Cornerback
Richard Sherman has bounced back from injury well enough this year, that he’s likely going to be back next season. Which is a good thing for the 49ers. They’re incredibly thin at the cornerback spot and need some serious help.

Yes, they still have Ahkello Witherspoon and Tarvarius Moore under contract for a few more years. And Greg Mabin will be a restricted rights free agent, so they may still possibly bring him back, but he’s better suited for an inside role.
It’s more than obvious that San Francisco needs a solid, reliable, outside cornerback. Neither Witherspoon, nor Moore, has showed the consistency needed to play the position reliably. The current make up of San Francisco’s secondary gives up an average of 248 passing yards per game, which is in the lower half of the league.
Cornerback may be San Francisco’s top priority in next year’s Draft. They may gamble that they can find a veteran pass rusher on the free agent market, and take a younger guy to bolster their secondary.
However they go about it, it is most definitely critical that they get improved play from their corners by upgrading the other side of the field. Sherman is locking down one side of the field and quarterbacks aren’t challenging him much. But they’re feasting on the other side of the field, whether it’s Witherspoon Moore, Mabin, or Santa Claus the 49ers are running out, they’re getting abused regularly.
Which makes it very likely that with that top – or at least, top-three pick – the 49ers will be looking to add a cornerback like LSU’s Andraez Williams (aka Greedy Williams), Georgia’s Deandre Baker, or Alabama’s Trevon Diggs.
All three project very well at the next level and could have an immediate positive impact on San Francisco’s passing defense.
