Change is coming to the back line of Oakland’s defense. It has to unless Gruden is content seeing opposing receivers blow by his safeties like they weren’t even there.

  • With Reggie Nelson (hopefully, hopefully hopefully) being put out to pasture next season, the Marcus Gilchrist era over, and Karl Joseph obviously not long for the Silver and Black world, really all the Raiders will be left with is Erik Harris, who has proven himself to be a pretty capable guy.

But, the fact of the matter is, the Raiders will need help at the safety spot. And while it’s very possible – even likely – the add a youngster in the Draft, Gruden will likely look to shore it up with some veteran help as well.

Which brings us to Green Bay castoff and current Washington safety, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

At six-foot-one, 208 pounds, Clinton-Dix has good size and length. He’s also got the speed to cover a lot of ground in the defensive backfield, and has terrific instinctual awareness of the plays as they develop in front of him.

Over his five years in the league, Clinton-Dix has turned himself into one of the league’s better safeties with 397 tackles (312 solo), 25 passes defensed, 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, and 14 total interceptions.

Clinton-Dix would be an absolute upgrade at the safety position and the sort of leader on the field Oakland’s secondary could really use.
