Good: White Lightning Showed Up

For the third week in a row, the Raiders featured one of their pass catchers, and they had a big day. In week one, it was Jared Cook, who went off for 180 yards on nine receptions. Last week in Denver, it was Amari Cooper checking in with 116 yards on ten receptions.

  • This week’s featured receiver was Jordy Nelson, who had six receptions for 173 yards, and a touchdown on the day. If he’d only been faster though, he may have had two or three, as he got caught from behind on a couple of long pass plays.

The one caveat to Nelson’s performance though, is that almost 140 of his 173 receiving yards came in the first half. He was relatively quiet afte halftime, and didn’t get a lot of balls thrown his way. Which, given the ease with which he was slicing up the Miami secondary doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Still, it was a good showing for the 33-year old receiver. It showed that he does indeed still have some gas left in the tank, and can still be explosive. He can still be a significant contributor to this offense. His eruption against Miami should hopefully quiet some of his detractors. At least, for a little bit.

It was good to see Nelson get involved with the offense, and we can hope his contributions only grow as the season goes on.
