Oakland Raiders: A few guys who need to perform well in preseason finale

Mario Edwards Jr.
When the Raiders took Mario Edwards Jr. out of Florida State in the second round of the 2015 Draft, they thought they were getting a big, physical, imposing presence on the line. They thought they were getting a disruptive force who could push the pocket, and get after the quarterback.

What they’ve gotten over the last three seasons he’s been with the team is – well – not much to write home about. Over the last three seasons, they’ve gotten 30 total games – with 24 total starts – 71 total tackles (53 solo), and 5.5 total sacks.
In other words, they’ve gotten a guy who can’t stay healthy, and has not played a full 16-game slate in his entire three-year career.
With young talent like Arden Key, P.J. Hall, and Maurice Hurst paring with Justin Ellis, Oakland’s defensive line is suddenly pretty stacked. And former second-round pick or not, Edwards is very much on the roster bubble at this point.
Through three preseason games, Edwards has notched just three total tackles (two solo). He’s played 71 total snaps through this three games – 15 against Detroid, 23 against the Rams, and 33 against Green Bay – but his impact has been negligible. At best.
Edwards is at a crossroads in his Raiders career – Gruden hasn’t been shy about getting rid of people, regardless of how high of a draft pick they were. And if he wants to earn a spot on the 53-man roster, he’s going to need to do something special against Seattle.
