San Francisco 49ers: The good, bad, and ugly in preseason loss to Colts
By Kevin Saito
Bad: Jimmy Garoppolo
It’s hard to say that Jimmy Garoppolo was bad, per se. He wasn’t bad. He just wasn’t necessarily good against a Colts defense that’s going to struggle once the regular season gets underway.

For whatever reason, Garoppolo struggled against the Colts, throwing for 135 yards, but on just 47 percent passing (9/19). He also went without a touchdown, though he didn’t throw an interception – luckily. There were a couple of passes the Colts got their hands on – and should have picked off – but dropped.
Garoppolo ended the night with a QB rating of 71.2 – a far cry from the sort of performance we’ve come to expect of the burgeoning franchise quarterback.
Perhaps it’s simply a case of us needing to temper our expectations of Garoppolo a bit. There are going to be some rough times ahead as opposing teams get more tape on him and figure out how to better defend against him.
He played the first half, plus the first series of the third quarter, and was only able to muster six points, leading the team on just two field goal drives. Now, it wasn’t all his fault, of course. He had a couple of dropped passes that certainly didn’t help, and some sloppy play by others on the offensive side of the ball.
It’s definitely not all on Garoppolo. He needs help from his teammates. But, the fact of the matter is, Garoppolo didn’t look nearly as sharp as we’ve seen him before. And this team, though up and coming, has very little margin for error. They need more from their franchise quarterback.
