Good: Chris Warren III

We’re simply running out of superlatives to describe Chris Warren III, the UDFA rookie out of Texas, at this point. He’s been so much more than anybody anticipated since the Raiders picked him up to be a camp body, and provide a little competition to a deep running backs group.

  • His stat line against Green Bay wasn’t as sizzling as his previous two games (54 yards on 15 carries, and one touchdown), but he was still efficient, and picked up some tough yards when needed.

Doug Martin is supposedly locked in as the primary backup to Marshawn Lynch, and while he didn’t look bad (24 yards on six carries), Warren has far outshined him. Martin’s four yard average against Green Bay looks even more anemic when you consider the fact that 16 of those yards came on one run – meaning he had just eight yards combined on his other five carries.

Gruden has been known to carry quite a few backs into the regular season, but Oakland’s backfield is so crowded right now, it doesn’t stand to reason that he’s going to take them all.

And although Warren was picked up originally to be a camp body, he’s really made it difficult for Gruden to justify cutting him, or banishing him to the practice squad. With DeAndre Washington missing time with an injury – and a skill set virtually identical to Jalen Richard – it would stand to reason he’s going to be the odd man out.

Warren’s performances this preseason demand that he be on the 53-man roster – and could quite very well demand that he skip over Martin on the depth chart.
