Oakland Raiders: The good, bad, and ugly in preseason win over the Packers
By Kevin Saito
Bad: Donald Penn
It’s hard to be too hard on the guy. He did just come back following a long layoff after surgery. Not to mention the fact that upon coming back, he was immediately switched to the opposite side of the line – a position he’s played incredibly sparingly over the course of his career.
Which is why we have to cut the guy a little slack. Yeah, he let through the only sack of the night on Derek Carr. But, again, he’s a work in progress, as of the moment.

Against the Packers, Penn showed that the transition from the left to the right isn’t going to be smooth right away. He’s so used to lining up on the left, that his natural inclination is to position himself as if he’s still there. His footwork is still that of a left, rather than a right, tackle.
HC Jon Gruden is going to need to cover for Penn’s deficiencies until he can get comfortable in the role. He’s going to need to keep a tight end lined up over there to help block the quick speed rushers, or a back to help chip them.
There were some encouraging signs though. Penn struggled early, but seemed to get better and stronger as the game went on. His strength and athleticism were on display in the run game, it’s his pass protection that’s going to need some real work.
It’s going to be a process, and all the while, they’re going to have to hope rookie Kolton Miller can hold it down on the other side until Penn figures it out. Once he gets there – and he will get there – Oakland is going to have one of the most dominant lines in football.
