Alfred Morris

In the wake of all the running back injuries, Alfred Morris has emerged as the front-runner to make the team as the 49ers’ third running back.

We’ve talked extensively on here how Morris is a really under the radar signing that could pay big dividends for Shanahan’s offense. Now with the recent injury to Joe Williams, it’s Morris’ job to lose at this point.

Morris will more than likely get the start at running back on Saturday and his performance will decide his fate with the team. The 49ers never promised Morris anything when they signed him, but the opportunity is here.

Morris is a good fit for the current group of running backs that the 49ers have. Saturday will be a big test to see how his conditioning is and how familiar he really is with Shanahan’s pass blocking schemes.

The fact that Morris is the new favorite to be the team’s third running back doesn’t lessen Raheem Mostert‘s chances of making the team. Before the third running back competition started, Mostert already provided a great deal of value on special teams, and it should continue this season.

Kyle Shanahan and Jon Lynch have said over the course of training camp that this camp was going to be difficult because they are going to have to get rid of talented players. Well for the sake of the 49ers’ backfield, let’s hope that Morris isn’t one of those players.
