Wide Receivers

When the offseason started, 49er fans were clamoring for John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan to bring in a big name wide receiver. Names like Allen Robinson, Sammy Watkins, and even Dez Bryant were all names that fans wanted Lynch to sign.

Well as it turns out, Lynch and Shanahan knew exactly what they were doing by not splurging on a big name receiver. Instead, they extended Marquise Goodwin and moved up in the draft to select Dante Pettis in the second round.

Now, wide receiver is arguably San Francisco’s deepest position on their depth chart. With the return of Pierre Garcon, San Francisco’s receiving group is six to seven players deep.

Goodwin and Trent Taylor have already shown both in practice and during in-game situations that they are already in mid-season form with Garoppolo. Garcon is getting his first work with Garoppolo under center, but Shanahan is not concerned about their connection.

Rookies Dante Pettis and Richie James have shown great promise in the slot and have big-play potential anytime they are on the field.

Those are five names not including Kendrick Bourne (has a great rapport with Garoppolo), Aldrick Robinson worked with Shanahan in Washington (2011-2013), Atlanta (2016), and now San Francisco, or Victor Bolden who figures to be the likely odd man out due to receiving a four-game suspension due to PEDs.

The receiver group does not have any standout names, but they are showing that they are all talented and this might be the team’s deepest unit.
