San Francisco Giants Minor League Major Performers: Gomez Coming On Strong

The San Francisco Giants season is slipping away from them, but their minor league affiliates are playing out the last couple weeks of their own seasons.

After another week, here are the major performers from each minor league squad.

AAA Sacramento – Miguel Gomez

Sacramento second baseman Miguel Gomez went on an absolute tear to finish out the week. He collected 13 hits in 27 at-bats, good for a .481 average, and led the club with five RBI. He picked up multiple hits in all five games from Wednesday to Sunday, including three-hit affairs on Thursday and Friday. He’s gaining his first AAA experience this season, and is hitting .289 in 49 games over two separate stints at the level.

AAA Honorable Mentions: IF Kelby Tomlinson took an 18-game hitting streak in AAA into Sunday, but it ended following an 0-4. He hit exactly .400 (25-61) during the streak, the longest by a River Cat this season. Tomlinson was called up to San Francisco on three separate occasions during his hitting streak, which stretched back to July 3rd…1B Brock Stassi went 9-21 (.429) on the week, with a pair of doubles, four RBI, and seven walks. He’s hitting .480/.594/.600 in eight games since joining the organization…C Aramis Garcia collected the first AAA hits of his career, going 7-14 (.500) and driving in three runs. He had the game-winning hit on Thursday, a two-run single that broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth…RHP Jordan Johnson earned his first AAA win, throwing seven innings of two-run ball on Thursday.

Double-A Richmond: Caleb Gindl

Outfielder Caleb Gindl made it to the big leagues with the Brewers in 2013 and 2014, but he’s working his way back with the Flying Squirrels. He had a big week last week, hitting .524 (11-21) and leading the team with four doubles and six RBI. He also hit a home run. Gindl had at least one hit in all six games, and at least two hits in four of those games. In 54 games with Richmond, Gindl is hitting .306/.363/.441.

AA Honorable Mentions: In his third Eastern League start, RHP Logan Webb pitched into the sixth inning for the first time since coming back from Tommy John surgery. He struck out a personal best nine batters and didn’t allow a run in 5.1 innings…LHP Conner Menez was hit hard on Tuesday, but came back and struck out a career-high 11 batters in six innings on Sunday. Overall, he has 158 strikeouts in 126.2 innings this year…SS Ryan Howard went 8-24 (.333) with two doubles, a triple, and a home run in six games.

High-A San Jose – Carlos Sano

Righty Carlos Sano was just signed as an international free agent this past year as a 24-year-old from the Dominican Republic, but he’s making the most of his first year of pro ball. On Saturday, he tossed six innings of one-run ball, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out a career-high nine.

Sano began the year as a reliever, but has been stellar since moving into San Jose’s rotation. He owns a 2.51 ERA and 1.114 WHIP as a starter, and has struck out just about a batter per inning (46 K, 46.2 IP). Saturday was Sano’s ninth start, and his seventh allowing two or fewer runs. He hasn’t allowed more than two runs in his past five efforts.

A+ Honorable Mentions: LHP Mac Marshall continues to work his way back after nerve transposition surgery cost him all but two appearances last season. On Sunday, he went a season-high five innings as his inning limit slowly expands, allowing one run on five hits and no walks…LF Heath Quinn had another big week, going 8-19 (.421) with three doubles and a team-high five RBI…RF Sandro Fabian is attempting to turn a rough season around, and he went 5-13 (.385) with a double, a home run, and four RBI.

Single-A Augusta – Heliot Ramos

It wasn’t a great week for Augusta. Heliot Ramos batted .259 on the week with a .286 OBP, but stood out in a light week because of his extra-base prowess. Among his seven hits, he picked up his 10th home run of the season, and hit a pair of doubles. He drove in four runs, and led the team with four runs scored.

A Honorable Mentions: RF Logan Baldwin had five hits, including two doubles, and drove in a team-high five runs. He also stole two bags, bringing his total to a team-leading 24 steals on the year…SS Manuel Geraldo went 8-24 (.333) with a double and an RBI…RHP Camilo Doval allowed one hit in 2.2 innings across a pair of relief appearances, striking out four and recording a save along the way.

Low-A Salem-Keizer – Seth Corry

Young lefty Seth Corry continues to throw the ball well for Salem-Keizer. The 19-year-old out of Utah twirled five scoreless innings on Saturday, continuing his recent run of strong outings at his newest level. In this particular effort, Corry allowed two singles and two walks to the Hops while striking out three.

He’s made three starts since being promoted to the Volcanoes, and has allowed just one earned run in 14.2 innings. His seven walks issued is still a bit high, but he’s only given up five hits and has struck out 13 batters.

A- Honorable Mentions: OF Dalton Combs hit .450 (9-20) last week, picking up two doubles, a triple, and a home run along the way…1B Robinson Medrano hit a pair of home runs on Sunday, his second career multi-home run game and his first since 2015…RHP Jake Wong made two starts, allowing one run over six innings while striking out seven…2B Kyle McPherson went 8-22 (.364) with four doubles, a triple, and six RBI.

  • AZL Black – Israel Cruz

    Right-hander Israel Cruz, acquired last winter in the Matt Moore trade, dominated on Wednesday. Facing the AZL Athletics, Cruz tossed four shutout innings, scattering three hits and a pair of walks. He struck out eight batters, a personal best in his 54-game career. That outing marked Cruz’s first shutout outing of the season.

    AZLB Honorable Mentions: 3B Sean Roby hit .400 (8-20) over the week, hitting a home run and driving in three runs…RHP Luis Moreno threw six innings in his start, allowing an unearned run. He gave up five hits a walk while striking out five.

    AZL Orange – Yorlis Rodriguez

    19-year-old third baseman Yorlis Rodriguez had a strong week in Arizona. The Cuban product put together a .421 average (8-19), and hit each leg of the cycle throughout the week. He drove in seven runs, a number that led the entire system. He capped off his week with a two-run triple on Sunday to give his club a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. On the season, Rodriguez is hitting .315/.404/.432 over 38 games in his first pro season.

    AZLO Honorable Mentions: IF Anyesber Sivira hit .381 (8-21) with a double, a home run, and two RBI…RHP Jasier Herrera threw six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) in his start, striking out six without allowing a walk…RHP Francis Pena also tossed six strong, allowing one run on three hits and a walk. His eight strikeouts matched a career-high.

    DSL – Sonny Vargas

    17-year-old left-hander Sonny Vargas continued his recent run of dominance on Tuesday. He shut out the Royals 2 squad over six innings, holding them to three hits while striking out six and not issuing a walk. It marked his fourth consecutive start without an earned run allowed. In those four starts, the only run that has scored was unearned, putting together a .500 WHIP and .114/.136/.152 slash-line. He’s struck out 20 batters in 20 innings, compared to just two walks.

    DSL Honorable Mentions: 1B Ismael Alcantara had a big week as well. He hit .458/.500/.583 across 26 plate appearances, leading the team with three doubles and five RBI. He also stole a bag…C Cesar Gonzalez only played one game, but hit two home runs and a double, driving in four runs. Those were the first home runs of his pro career.
