Oakland Raiders: The good, bad, and ugly in preseason loss to the Rams
By Kevin Saito
Bad: Turnovers
A couple of seasons ago, the Raiders were one of the better teams in the league when it came to turnover differential – which happened to correspond with a 12-4 record, and a playoff berth.
Last season, they were one of the worst in the league at giving the ball away, and not getting any turnovers of their own – which happened to correspond with a 6-10 record, and a full turnover of the coaching staff.

The link between winning the turnover battle and winning games is very well and extensively documented. And so far this preseason, the Raiders are adding more evidence to support that link.
To wit, although they didn’t “win” the turnover battle against Detroit, they didn’t lose it – both teams lost a fumble. Against LA, the Raiders “lost” the battle by losing a pair of fumbles, though they did pick off a Brandon Allen pass in the fourth quarter – which was nice to see, since we didn’t see the Raiders intercepting many passes at all last season.
But still, this case of butterfingers – three lost fumbles in three games, two of them by quarterback E.J. Manuel alone – is going to cost this team some games if they can’t tighten that down right quick.
No team in this league, it doesn’t matter if it’s Cleveland or New England, is going to win many games if they keep giving the ball up, while not getting any takeaways of their own.
Last year, the Raiders had a turnover differential of negative 14. And we saw where that got them. So far this preseason, they’re sitting at negative one.
Yeah, it’s the preseason, but this is something that needs to be tightened up on the double.
