Kolton Miller (Left Tackle)

And speaking of that first-round draft pick. All eyes will be on Kolton Miller as he lines up in Penn’s usual spot to protect Carr’s blindside.

The rookie has been making a good impression on his teammates, with the likes of Bruce Irvin heaping praise on him for his ability and his work ethic. He’s reportedly done a great job against the defense, and has held his own against some of Oakland’s pass rushers – though, there were a couple of reports about Arden Key blowing by him.

For the most part though, all reports out of camp – except for the couple of plays he was manhandled by a Lions defensive player during joint practices – have been tremendous. Glowing. Dripping with praise. The coaching staff has had nothing but positive things to say about Miller and his potential to be an elite tackle in the game.

Whether that’s to exert some sort of leverage over Penn or if it’s true, we don’t know yet. We’ll get to see firsthand though, when Miller lines up for his first live game reps.

Protecting Carr is critical this season – which is why the Raiders rolling the dice with Penn right now is so curious. It also shows how confident they must feel about Miller. If Miller plays well and looks to be ready to roll on the left, Oakland may part ways with Penn. If he struggles – well – that only strengthens Penn’s position to not take a pay cut.

Either way, it will make Miller’s pro debut well worth watching.
