The San Francisco Giants were back in action on Tuesday and won a tight one, but most of their affiliates couldn’t come away with the same result.

The San Francisco Giants won a hard-fought game against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, but it wasn’t a great day in the organization. Four of the five teams that took the field lost. AAA Sacramento, high-A San Jose, single-A Augusta, and the DSL Giants all lost. Salem-Keizer were the only ones to come away with a win on the day, their third straight victory.

Rain continues to batter the east coast, and the AA Flying Squirrels’ contest against the Erie SeaWolves, in Erie, PA, was postponed. That game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Both the AZL Black and AZL Orange team had the day off on Tuesday.

Logan Webb

Logan Webb is getting a lot of attention this year, and for good reason. His tremendous season continued on Tuesday, as he hurled five more shutout innings, allowing three hits and three walks while punching out six batters.

Webb threw a clean first inning, picking up two of his strikeouts, then worked through trouble the rest of his night. He stranded a single in the second, a walk in the fourth, and then another single in the fifth. He needed some help from his defense in the third, as he got in a jam by walking a pair. After a single, right fielder Jacob Heyward made a strong throw home to gun down a potential run at the plate. That was Heyward’s ninth outfield assist, and helped preserve a 1-0 lead.

More from Golden Gate Sports

Webb has been featured here a few times before, and though the repetition isn’t purposeful, it’s impossible to ignore the year he’s having. After his effort on Tuesday, he has a 1.94 ERA and 1.206 WHIP, and has struck out 68 batters in 69.2 innings. He pitched into the fifth inning for the third straight outing, and completed five for the second straight time. Before this stretch, he hadn’t gone more than four innings in an appearance since returning from Tommy John surgery last June.

David Villar

Salem-Keizer’s third baseman, David Villar, was hitless in regulation. He needed a 10th inning to get his first hit of the evening, but he made it a big one.

The Volcanoes and the Eugene Emeralds went into extra innings tied at two, Villar came to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. He saw just one pitch from Sean Barry, crushing a double to center field that scored a pair of runs. He would have had three RBI had the ball not bounced over the center field fence for a ground-rule double, but those two runs would be enough. Salem-Keizer came away with a 4-3 win.

  • Villar was the Giants’ 11th round pick in the most recent draft, and he’s off to an excellent start as a pro. In 30 games, he’s hitting .300/.365/.527 since being drafted out of South Florida. He’s been with Salem-Keizer for 24 of those games, and leads the team with 10 doubles and 22 RBI, and is second to first-round pick Joey Bart with five home runs.

    Norwith Gudino

On the pitching side in Salem-Keizer, it was right-hander Norwith Gudino that handled business on the mound. He threw five shutout innings, allowing just three singles and a walk while striking out four.

Gudino opened his game with a perfect first inning, but wouldn’t have another clean inning throughout the night. Instead, he worked around a baserunner in each inning, not allowing one to come around and score. His night ended with a little help from his catcher, Ricardo Genoves, who gunned down a would-be base-stealer at second base.

The 22-year-old Venezuelan is now in his fourth pro season after signing as an international free agent in 2014. Tuesday’s outing was his first shutout start of the season in seven tries, and just his second shutout outing of the year. In his affiliated debut on June 1st, he threw three scoreless frames in relief for the San Jose squad.
