San Francisco Giants 3 Up, 3 Down: Snaking a Series Win
3 DOWN
1 – Bumgarner’s Offense is Back
In the same way that Matt Cain would routinely get little-to-no run support, Bumgarner is in the same category. Things were back to normal in that regard on Tuesday. The Giants gave him two runs to erase his two-run second inning, but had the opportunity to do so much more. In the fifth inning, they failed to score at all in a bases loaded, no outs situation. Bumgarner was one of the strikeout victims before Gorkys Hernandez and Buster Posey suffered the same fate. They loaded the bases again in the seventh, and again didn’t score.
Patrick Corbin has been fantastic this season, and he made his pitches again on Tuesday when he needed it. But the Giants had put a couple dents in his armor and just could not break through. It’s a terrible coincidence that this seems to happen with Bumgarner on the mound more than anyone else, and hopefully it ends soon.
2 – Golden Goldy
All this fuss is being made about Paul Goldschmidt’s terrible slump, but the Giants haven’t seen a slumping Goldschmidt yet this season. He again terrorized Giants’ pitching in this series, racking up eight hits, four for extra-bases, in three games. He especially killed them on Wednesday, going 4-5 with three doubles and a pair of RBI.
In nine games against the Giants this season, Goldschmidt is hitting .484/.553/.886 with 10 extra-base hits. In 51 games against everyone else, he’s down at .188/.307/.339 with 14 extra-base hits. Giants’ pitching is responsible for 41.7 percent of his extra-base hits despite being responsible for just 14.8 percent of his plate appearances. Eventually, they’ll learn to pitch around him in big situations.
