The Golden State Warriors defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers in game one of the 2018 NBA Finals by a score of 124-114. What did we learn from this game?

It was not pretty, but the Golden State Warriors have captured the first win of the 2018 NBA Finals. Thanks to a ridiculous goof by Cleveland Cavalier’s shooting guard, J.R. Smith, the Warriors managed to avoid dropping a game they had no business losing.

Winning in over time by a score of 124-114, the Warriors played well enough to secure the win. This team was led by the superb play of Stephen Curry tonight. Curry played a great game, especially in the first half, finishing with 29 points, six rebounds and nine assists. Curry’s scoring load was matched by the team’s other two big time scorers, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson. The two scored 26 and 24 points, respectively.

While it was indeed enough of an effort to avoid losing home court advantage in the series, the team’s performance certainly could have been better.

As currently constructed, the Cleveland Cavaliers are a team that should not have a chance when it comes to playing the Golden State Warriors in Oracle Arena. By the simple fact that they were just one missed free throw away from defeating the Dubs, the Warriors clearly did not play their best game.

In a game where the Warriors should have lost, there is much to analyze. Why were the Cavaliers in a position to win the game? Why weren’t the Warriors playing up to their potential? What did they do right?

These are all questions that need answers. Here are three takeaways from game one that may serve to answer some of these questions.
