Isaac’s Projection: Round Five (pick 143): Josey Jewell (LB – Iowa)

When the fifth round comes around, it will be time for the team to add some more linebacker depth. Josey Jewell is a middle linebacker from Iowa who will slip in the draft due to his lack of athleticism but would be a great pick to backup Reuben Foster for the 49ers.

  • Jewell may lack the athleticism you see in a star linebacker, but he knows how to play the game and can be a very effective player right away as a backup. You want players like him as reserves, players you can be confident they will know what to do when the time comes. As a player who has found success despite not being a great athlete, Jewell has to be that type of player.

Kevin’s Projection: Round Five (pick 143): Quenton Meeks (CB – Stanford)

The 49ers stay home for this pick, adding Stanford corner Quenton Meeks to their rookie haul.

Though some believe Meeks should have returned to Stanford for his senior season, others see him as a cornerback with a lot of potential and a reasonably high ceiling. At six-foot-one, 195 pounds, he’s got good size, and having run a 4.53, he’s got good speed.

Over his time at Stanford, he was reliable, tracked balls well, was solid in press coverage, and a very willing tackler in the run game. There are some concerns about his game, but if Kyle Shanahan’s staff can coach him up, he can erase many of those concerns. He’s got a high football IQ and is able to diagnose and correct many of his own issues by watching film.

He’ll be a bit of a project, but he could turn out to be a tremendous value pick, adding valuable depth to San Francisco’s secondary.
