Oakland Raiders: Six most logical targets with the tenth-overall pick
By Kevin Saito
Derwin James (S – Florida State)
James is one of the most dynamic safeties on the board. Scratch that, he might be one of the most dynamic players on the board – period. At six-foot-three, 215 pounds, James has all the tools to be a premier safety in this league.
The only problem is, the Raiders already have two young safeties back there. Karl Joseph, entering year three, has already proven himself capable of playing at a high level. They also have an athletic freak in Obi Melifonwu – and given that he basically redshirted his rookie year, they don’t yet know what they have in him. Yet.
There’s also Shalom Luani, who’s shown some flashes of ability and strong play. And let’s also not forget the recently signed Marcus Gilchrist – the veteran glue that will hold that unit together.
It’s possible that because he’s an elite athlete and the way he carries himself in the locker room, as well as his relentless drive and incredible work ethic, may make him too intriguing of a prospect for Gruden and McKenzie to pass up if he’s there – despite the fact that he has very limited experience, given his injury history.
Given the fact though, that the Raiders need to knock this draft out of the park, and that they need players who can contribute right away – thanks to pretty poor overall drafting the last couple of years – James would be more luxury than necessity at this point, given the bodies they have at the position already.
Though he is likely on their board, and they may strongly consider him should he be there, they may ultimately decide to draft an impact player at a position with a bigger need.
Likelihood: 6/10
