In their first night action of the year, the San Francisco Giants knocked off the Seattle Mariners by a final of 4-0. Here are some notable performances from the day.

The San Francisco Giants visited the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, participating in their first night game of the 2018 season. Giants’ pitching dominated the day, shutting out the Mariners while allowing just four hits, all singles, and striking out 12 batters. The four runs and six hits produced by the lineup were more than enough.

Here are three players who stood out from Thursday night:

1 – Johnny Cueto

Cueto was back on the mound for his second start on Thursday night, and he looked like his old self. In his three innings of work, he allowed just two hits (one could have probably been ruled an error at third base) and struck out five without allowing a walk.

He brought his entire repertoire out against the Mariners. He threw a lot of fastballs, but mixed in a good amount of changes and curveballs as well. He was able to throw everything where he wanted, consistently keeping the breaking ball below the zone and pulling the string with the changeup. He only went to a three-ball count once in 11 batters faced.

Cueto even threw using his wide variety of deliveries. He brought out the quick-pitch, the big turn-around, and the shimmy. All of this equals a promising performance for Cueto, whom the Giants will need to have a big comeback year after a disastrous 2017.

2 – Jarrett Parker

This was one of Parker’s better games with the bat this spring. He started as the designated hitter and put together some good at-bats, collecting a hit and a walk along the way.

In each of his first two plate appearances, Parker fell behind 0-2 in the count and was able to work back and fill the count. During his first at-bat, he went down and golfed a fastball at the bottom of the zone, lacing a double through the gap in left-center field. In his second, he worked a walk.

Parker couldn’t complete a perfect day, flying out harmlessly in a 3-1 count against young flamethrower Edwin Diaz in the sixth inning. Still, this was a good starting point if Parker is to right his ship and work his way on the opening day roster.

3 – Trevor Brown

2017 was a quiet year for Brown, and the start to his spring was also quiet, but he made some noise on Thursday. The man behind the plate hit ninth in the order, but he was the big performer for the Giants.

Brown came up with two doubles, both hit to almost the same place in right-center field, and drove in three of the Giants’ four runs. Brown entered the game with no extra-base hits and just one RBI in his first seven exhibition games.

With Buster Posey and Nick Hundley secure on the roster, Brown won’t be back to big leagues this year without an injury in front of him. But after a dismal year in 2017, with injuries and poor performances dominating the year, having a good year in AAA would be great for him.
