San Francisco 49ers Mailbag: The Future Is Looking Bright
Sanjai Singh on Facebook asked: How can the 49ers improve their red zone efficiency?
The red zone problems have been here from the start of the season and I don’t see it going away until next season. Neither Brian Hoyer nor C.J. Beathard could overcome it and Garoppolo hasn’t thrown for many touchdowns either.
Part of the problem is that the 49ers like to shoot themselves in the foot with simple mistakes. They take penalties, that push them back five or ten yards, as well as take a fair number of sacks. The momentum gets killed and they have to rely on Robbie Gould to bail them out with some points.
Next season we should see an improvement in scoring, hopefully. If the 49ers can give Garoppolo a number one type receiver, he’ll also get Pierre Garcon back and maybe Aaron Burbridge can break out for them.
Let’s not forget Marquise Goodwin and Trent Taylor as well. George Kittle and Garrett Celek have proven to be a good tight end duo, so maybe they can be reliable targets. There is also fullback Kyle Juszczyk as an option, who has played much better with Garoppolo under center.
A better offensive line next season should also give Garoppolo more time to get a pass out, as well as give the running backs more holes to run through — whoever the running backs are next season.
