Oakland Raiders: A Few Names To Keep, A Few To Dump Ahead Of 2018
By Kevin Saito
Keep: Denico Autry
One of the recurring themes surrounding this defense has been the lack of pressure they get on the quarterback. Though, that has started to change with the firing of Norton and the elevation of John Pagano to the DC position.
With Pagano calling the shots, the defense has been far more aggressive and has seemed to get after the quarterback in a way we haven’t seen in the last couple of seasons.
Pagano’s scheme has seemed to really be to the liking of Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin, who have been sack machines ever since Norton was sent packing. Pagano calling the defensive shots has also seemed to agree with free agent to be, Denico Autry.
An unrestricted free agent when the season ends, the Raiders would do well to retain Autry’s services.
Originally an undrafted free agent out of Mississippi State in 2014, Autry has carved out a pretty decent niche for himself. And over his four seasons with the team, playing in a part-time role, Autry has amassed 96 total tackles and 9.5 sacks.
Autry has played in 14 games this year, making just one start. He plays with energy, provides a spark, and now, unshackled by Pagano, is becoming a force on the defensive line. Reflecting that fact is that this season has been the best of his career, as he’s recorded career highs in total tackles (32), sacks (4), and passes defensed (7) – and there are still two games left in this season.
