The San Francisco 49ers rallied for their second win of the season on the road against the Chicago Bears. Read on for unit grades!

For the second time this season, the San Francisco 49ers earned a win. This win was the first on the road this season for the 49ers after they beat the New York Giants at home. Jimmy Garoppolo made his first start as a 49er and, albeit he wasn’t perfect, he showed that the 49ers have found their quarterback of the future. A win is the perfect start for the Jimmy G era in San Francisco as they defeated the Bears 15-14.

Offense

It’s obvious that this team feeded off the energy brought upon by Garoppolo. The pass protection wasn’t perfect, but they played one of their best games of the season. Marquise Goodwin and Trent Taylor had arguably their best performances as 49ers.

Goodwin caught eight passes for 99 yards on eight targets, and Taylor caught six passes for 92 yards on all six targets. How incredible is that? Goodwin continues to have a career year as he became the number one receiver for this team after Pierre Garcon went down for the season. Taylor is looking like a huge steal coming out of the draft as he and Garoppolo reminded many of a Tom BradyJulian Edelman connection. Garoppolo finished the game 26-of-37 for 293 yards and one interception, which wasn’t his fault.

The run game was bad at first, but they picked it up in the second half to make it easier for Garoppolo. Carlos Hyde finished with 54 yards on 17 carries and Matt Breida finished with 45 yards on 12 carries.

The offense failed to muster a single touchdown in 38 minutes of possession, as Robbie Gould made all field goals.

Grade: B

Defense

The defense for the 49ers was superb. The Bears only managed 147 yards of total offense compared to the 388 yards that the 49ers gained.

Rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky wasn’t terrible, but the Bears need to let him do more. He finished with 102 yards on 12-of-15 passing with one touchdown to receiver Dontrelle Inman.

In the ground game, Jordan Howard was held to 38 yards rushing on 13 carries and Trubisky kept the ball four times for 19 yards.

The defense also forced two fumbles but couldn’t recover either. They also had two sacks, courtesy of the veteran of Elvis Dumervil and newly signed defensive end Cassius Marsh. The way Marsh has played may signal the end of Aaron Lynch‘s time with San Francisco.

The 49ers defense came to play and only allowed one touchdown.

Grade: A

Special Teams

Robbie Gould was no doubt the MVP today for the San Francisco 49ers. He nailed all five of his field goal attempts, including the game-winning kick in his return for Chicago.

The downside of this unit was that they allowed Chicago returner Tarik Cohen to score a 61-yard punt return touchdown. The 49ers, who are number one in punt coverage, had only allowed 61 total yards on punt returns prior to that touchdown. The presence of star special teamer Raheem Mostert was certainly missed.

Gould’s heroics allows this unit to get a passing mark.

Grade: C

Garoppolo led the game-winning drive and gives this team another confidence boost as they head to Houston next week to take on Tom Savage and the Texans. A preview will be here soon so be sure to stay tuned!
