The San Francisco 49ers made a blockbuster trade for QB Jimmy Garoppolo, leaving winners and losers on the 49ers roster. Let’s check them out!

The San Francisco 49ers gave the league  one of the biggest storylines of the first half of the season, by making the out-of-nowhere trade for now, ex-Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

San Francisco gave up their 2018 second round draft pick to acquire Garoppolo, which leaves us with plenty of winner and losers only on the 49ers roster.

Winners

Kyle Shanahan

First-year head coach Kyle Shanahan finally got the quarterback he was looking for, and he was able to get rid of Brian Hoyer as well.

Both Hoyer and rookie C.J. Beathard have struggled this season, with the offensive line being a major part of their problems as well.

However, Shanahan has always seen Garoppolo as a quarterback that can fit his needs.

If Garoppolo can work well with Shanahan and his offense, this duo will be very exciting to watch.

Brian Hoyer

Losing what could potentially be, your last chance at a starting job to a third-round rookie isn’t exactly something that looks good on a resume.

Hoyer was initially part of this trade and would’ve headed to New England along with that draft pick. But, the Patriots, ever conscious of compensatory draft pick calculations, asked that Hoyer be removed from the deal.

Even though he was cut following the deal, Hoyer will most likely sign with New England, who have Tom Brady as the only quarterback on the roster.

Hoyer’s situation improved tremendously, moving from a backup position on a winless team, to a backup position on a potential title-contending team.

The Niners Offense and Jimmy Garoppolo

The last big winner goes to this offense, which was in desperate need of a quarterback. Well, they finally got one in Jimmy G.

Garoppolo is unlikely to start this week against Arizona, and potentially may not start again next week against the New York Giants either. But, once he does start taking starter’s reps, this offense should vastly improve as he learns the system and develops chemistry with his offense.

Guys like Pierre Garcon, Marquise Goodwin, George Kittle, and Trent Taylor will be players that improve with Garoppolo running this offense and it would be fantastic if they can all get things going and limit their drops.

Losers

C.J. Beathard

After Hoyer was benched, Beathard looked primed to be the starter for the rest of the season. But, that situation has now obviously changed.

Beathard is now the temporary quarterback until Garoppolo is comfortable with the system and ready to play. It is unfortunate that Beathard will eventually be replaced, but it’s the best option for the future of this team.

For 49er fans, this is the best piece of news that has come along in a while. San Francisco now has a quarterback they can evaluate for the rest of the season to see if he can be the long-term solution they so desperately need.

If Garoppolo fits the system and plays well, the 49ers may finally have some stability under center.

The Niners still have other holes to fill, especially along the offensive line and in the secondary. But at least for now, they may have found their quarterback.
