The “Congrats, You Didn’t Get Hurt!” Award

Co-Winners: Nick Hundley and Gorkys Hernandez

The Giants went through a lot of injuries in 2017. Every full-time starting position player hit the disabled list at least once, and most of the backups did too. A lot of the pitchers joined that party as well. Only two position players were on the 25-man roster from opening day until October 1st: Gorkys Hernandez and Nick Hundley

Hernandez spent a lot of time as a starter because of the aforementioned injuries to everyday outfielders like Jarrett Parker, Denard Span, and Hunter Pence, and somehow managed to navigate that minefield without getting seriously hurt. He did sprain his wrist in September but played through it in an effort to solidify his roster spot as a backup outfielder for 2018. He’s probably looking at hamate surgery this offseason.

Hundley played well for the most part as Buster Posey‘s backup, which is no easy task. When Posey moved to first base down the stretch to prevent injuries, Hundley did just fine. He was a great teammate as well, winning the Willie Mac Award. He is, of course, a catcher, so he was probably playing through pain of some kind every day, but never let them keep him out of the lineup. You know what they say, the best ability is availability.

Congrats, gentlemen, you didn’t get hurt! That’s an accomplishment in 2017.
