GLENDALE, AZ – AUGUST 12: Offensive tackle Ian Silberman /

Ian Silberman

It wasn’t all that long ago that Mike Tice was talking Silberman up and he was one of the best stories in camp. Today though, Silberman is an Indianapolis Colt after getting claimed off waivers after being cut by the Raiders.

You can never have too much depth along that offensive line. And although the Raiders have one of the absolute best lines in the game today, you cannot overvalue having capable backups to the starters.

  • The Raiders have, arguably, the very best interior offensive line in the NFL. Gabe Jackson, Rodney Hudson, and Kelechi Osemele are three of the most efficient and ruthless offensive linemen in the game today. Good luck to anybody trying to get to quarterback Derek Carr through those three guys.

But the NFL season is long and players get nicked and dinged. Which is where having able bodies behind that starting from line comes into play.

The Raiders kept 10 offensive linemen – the five starters in Jackson, Hudson, Osemele, Donald Penn, and presumably Marshall Newhouse, obviously. In addition, they kept tackles Jylan Ware, David Sharpe, center/guard Jon Feliciano, guard Denver Kirkland, and guard/tackle Vadal Alexander.

There shouldn’t be any argument with most of those names. However, Silberman’s versatility – he showed his ability to play anywhere along the interior, center or guard – should have been a big point in his favor.

Silberman’s release was surprising as was the retention of Ware. Having missed time with a concussion, Ware never really seemed to be eye-poppingly great. He definitely has upside and potential, but he seemed better suited for a spot on the practice squad where he could take a little time to develop and hone skills that seem a little more on the raw side of things.

Obviously, Indianapolis saw enough in Silberman to snap him up when he hit waivers. And most thought that he’d done enough through the summer to lock down a roster spot. The fact that he didn’t, and is now gone, is very, very surprising.
