SAN DIEGO – OCTOBER 25: Tight-End Clive Walford /

Tight Ends (3)

Starter: Lee Smith

Reserve: Jared Cook, Clive Walford

With the addition of Jared Cook, the Raiders are fielding one of the better tight end groups in the league. And they are going to be a matchup nightmare for plenty of defenses around the league.

In Lee Smith, the Raiders have, arguably, the best blocking tight end in the game – he also happens to have good enough hands to snag a pass here and there.

  • In Cook and Walford, they have two players who are very similar – they are both big, strong, fast, and have terrific hands. With the ball in their hands, they’re both quick enough to outrun linebackers and big enough to make corners think twice about sticking their heads in there to make the tackle.

Having two big tight ends who can catch and run well is a big boon for an offense and can definitely add some effective wrinkles and layers – just ask Tom Brady and the Patriots about that. It’s going to be a big bonus for Carr and this Raiders offense – especially down in the red zone.

Originally one of McKenzie’s UDFA signings, Gabe Holmes is an intriguing prospect and one the team has held onto, trying to see what they have in him. Unfortunately, he’s not been able to be a regular contributor to this offense.

And that figures to be the case again this year as the Raiders will likely only carry three tight ends and Holmes, unfortunately, won’t be able to crack the roster. Though, he is still eligible for a spot on the practice squad, which may be where he winds up.
