 K.J. Brent

Age: 24

From: Waxhaw, NC

6’4”, 190lbs

College: Wake Forest (Transfer from South Carolina)

Unlike Johnny Holton, KJ Brent isn’t going to blow anyone away with his speed – he posted a 4.54 40 time. Where his value becomes apparent is in his ability to use his body to catch balls in traffic.

In an interview with Raiders.com, Brent said, “I’m not the stockiest, or biggest dude out there, but I have size. I have height, and I’m trying to use that more in my game.”

Brent ended up on the practice squad last year after a productive preseason in which he led this trio by recording seven receptions for 113 yards — just ahead of  Holton in catches.

Like most players entering their sophomore year in the NFL, KJ Brent feels more comfortable with the playbook, is thinking less, and feels more instinctive in his decision-making and route-running.

A roster spot might be more difficult to attain for Brent given his comparative lack of speed, but he possesses the right work ethic and ambition to have a fighting chance. He attended organized team activities and mini-camp this year and per a tweet, acknowledged that “great players are made in the off season.”

Indeed, the uphill climb to a roster spot is steep for undrafted players. It requires patience, self-belief in the face of difficult odds, and hard work when no one is looking. KJ Brent recognizes this and has acted accordingly.

More importantly than a positive attitude however, Brent will need to showcase his lengthy frame by making contested catches over the next four games.
