Hot Take: The San Francisco Giants didn’t get off to a hot start last week. They started the season 2-5 before returning home for Monday’s Opening Day at San Francisco.

They opened their 2017 season with a road trip to Arizona and San Diego. While the Giants were expected to be able to handle these opponents, and the offense came up strong, the pitching was, at times, a great weakness. No, this isn’t just a summary of last season. That is exactly how the Giants have started this season as well.

Heading home after the first week of the season, the Giants were 2-5, and have to play the same Diamondbacks again. The Giants are already in the basement of the NL West, and this is a tough division to make up ground in. All five teams could easily post 80-plus win seasons if things go well for them, and the Giants know that.

Madison Bumgarner did MadBum things. The bullpen did 2016 Giants things, not 2012 Giants things. The Padres brought out a team of twenty-somethings and actually looked pretty good. The Diamondbacks are suddenly the best team in baseball.

So what is there to make of the first week of action? The smart thing may be to just sit back and enjoy some baseball, and assume everything will fall in to place. However, that’s simply not what we’re all here for. Let’s shake our fists, roll our eyes, and debate the meaning of the word ‘overreaction’ together! The oven is on, and the hot takes are fresh and home-made!
