Corey Davis (WR – Western Michigan)

Though some scouts have Corey Davis pegged behind both Williams and Washington’s John Ross, Davis may actually be the better fit with Shanahan’s system.

As mentioned before, Shanahan is believed to be looking for the next Julio Jones to plug into his offense and Davis seems to fit the bill. Though Ross is lighting fast, he’s also 5’11” and more on par with a Brandin Cooks than a Julio Jones.

But like Williams, Davis stands 6’4” and weighs in at 209 lbs. Very Jones-like numbers. He also ran a 4.52 40, putting him in the same ballpark as Williams as well.

If Davis has one advantage over Williams, it’s that at this point, he’s got better hands. Williams had some trouble holding on to balls but Davis doesn’t seem to have that problem. Scouts rave about his hands as well as his route-running, movement after the catch, and his quickness – which some say is deceptively good.

And one area that Davis excels in – an area that is consistently overlooked – is that he is an excellent downfield blocker. That’s something that never makes the stat sheet, but something that can be crucial to an offense’s success.

Davis is big, tough, physical, doesn’t let defenders body up on him when making a catch, and has a smooth polish that some of the other receivers in this year’s Draft class lack.

Shanahan needs another Julio Jones to really make his offense go. And a very compelling case can be made that Davis could be that guy.
