Mike Williams (WR – Clemson)

The 49ers have done a pretty decent job of stocking up a wide receiving corps that was pretty bereft of talent and playmakers (although, one could argue that keeping Torrey Smith would have been a good idea).

But a receiving group that includes Pierre Garcon, Marquise Goodwin, and Jeremy Kerley, while not super dynamic, has the potential to be pretty solid. That trio should help elevate San Francisco’s passing game in Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system.

Despite the upgrades though, they still need a playmaker. A solid, young talent to round this group out. Many think Shanahan is looking for somebody to play the “Julio Jones role” in his offense – and given the success of Atlanta’s offense since Shanahan ran things, it’s hard to argue against it.

Clemson’s Mike Williams could step in and fill that “Julio Jones role” pretty well. Willims is very comparable to Jones in size (both are 6’4” and right around 220 lbs.). Both are quick, can go up and get a ball, and will win those 50/50 battles most of the time.

Lsat season, Williams racked up more than 1,300 yards on 98 catches – though, some argue his numbers could have been even greater had it not been for some consistency and accuracy problems on the part of quarterback Deshaun Watson.

If there is a weakness to his game, it’s that he’s going to have to clean up his dropped balls. Nothing kills an offense faster than dropping a sure reception. But Williams is tremendous in the red zone and can be the sort of big target and home run hitter Shanahan needs to really make his offense go.
