Oakland Raiders: Free Agents Still Up For Grabs Who Won’t Break The Bank
By Kevin Saito
Sen’Derrick Marks (DT)
Though some might immediately write him off as being “too old” at 30, Sen’Derrick Marks might still have some gas left in that tank of his.
The Raiders desperately need to upgrade their defensive line. Specifically, they need some defensive tackles who can push the pocket, apply some pressure to the quarterback, and help occupy blockers to give the pass rushers some room to operate.
At 6’1”, 300 lbs., Marks occupies a lot of space up front. He’s also proven capable of collapsing the pocket and getting some pressure on the quarterback. Though a veteran of eight seasons, Marks should still have some tread left on those tires – maybe another season or two of productive play, at least.
For his career, Marks has 253 tackles (150 solo), 19 sacks, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, 22 passes defensed, and an interception to his credit.
Marks found himself the odd man out after the Jaguars spent big on Malik Jackson and Calais Campbell the last two seasons, the emergence of Jacksonville’s fourth round pick in 2016, Sheldon Day, and their 2015 sixth round pick, Michael Bennett.
Of course, it helps that Jackson, Campbell, Day, and Bennett are all younger than Marks – and in the case of Bennett and Day, far cheaper.
As part of a rotation that includes Justin Ellis, Darius Latham, and Dan Williams (maybe – unless he’s released), Marks could be productive. He could also help add some teeth to the interior of that Oakland defensive line – something they really need.
And given that he was slated to make just over $3 million with Jacksonville this season, now that he’s 30 and looking for work, McKenzie might be able to get him for a song and a dance.
