Tyler Beede and Christian Arroyo Both Debut, but Not Until September

Beede and Arroyo are the Giants’ top two prospects, and both are on MLB.com’s top-100 prospects list. Coincidentally, they’re situated right next to each other at 88 and 89, respectively. They’ve yet to get to the big leagues, but both seem to be on track to hit Triple-A for the first time to start this season. That won’t be the highest level they play at next year.

Both guys will make their big league debuts in 2017, but not on because the Giants need them to. Their debuts will both come in September when rosters expand, as a sort of reward for a great minor league season/cup of coffee to see what they can do.

Think of it as something similar to Ty Blach‘s debut in 2016. Blach was called up because he had an outstanding year at Triple-A, and proved himself to be effective enough at the big league level to gain manager Bruce Bochy‘s favor. He performed so well that he was comfortable giving Blach the ball in game number 161, and Bochy was rewarded for his faith.

Beede and Arroyo will come up, not as necessity, but as a way to get their feet wet. If they prove themselves as immediate contributors to the Giants, they’ll be used as seen fit. If they don’t, they can stash them on the bench and try again next season.

Getting them on the 40-man roster will be a bit tricky, but injuries will happen and a trade might occur that opens up a spot or two. They’ll find a way to get the two up to the highest level, but what happens from there is hard to tell. Just getting them on the 40-man roster is a great starting point for 2018 and beyond, however.
