The 2016 season didn’t end the way the San Francisco Giants wanted, and they enter this offseason with clear needs. They’ve already started a small overhaul, firing their base coaches and making their offseason intentions clear.

Heading into next season, the core of the Giants’ team already looks pretty well set. They’ve got a pair of catchers that played every game last season. The infield is together again with all starters from last season (post-trade deadline) coming back. The outfield picture is a little less clear, but it seems two-thirds of it is set. The starting pitching is mostly full. The bench might be set, but no one really knows how that will shake out.

Beyond that, there are questions that are fair to ask. The questions will need to improve in certain areas from last season if they hope to again be a factor when the lights are brightest in October. They don’t look like a bad team as they are by any means, and they should be competitive again next season, but they can improve substantially.

Let’s ponder some of the big questions surrounding the Giants as free agency opens and the countdown to the 2017 season continues.
