2004: Boston Red Sox

Do the Red Sox reverse the curse without former A’s Johnny Damon, Keith Foulke, and Mark Bellhorn? No way, no how. Beane watched Damon and Foulke leave Oakland as free agents in 2001 and 2003 and traded Bellhorn to the Cubs in 2001, setting him on a path that would eventually take him to Boston. The A’s used the compensation draft picks acquired via the departures of Damon and Foulke on Nick Swisher, Mark Teahen, Landon Powell and Danny Putnam. Twelve years later, there are still several players in the A’s organization connected to Swisher via a dizzying series of trades: Casey Meisner, Sean Manaea, Jesse Hahn, Jed Lowrie, Raul Alcantara, Grant Holmes, Frankie Montas and Jharel Cotton.
