Cal Bears: Five Things From Opening Win Against Hawaii
5 – No Injuries!
One big thing for the Golden Bears on Friday is that the didn’t suffer any big injuries. The depth is already spotty as it is, especially defensively, so losing a starter in week one would be a huge blow.
Luckily, Cal doesn’t have to deal with that yet. They went in to the game relatively healthy, with the only big pieces missing being safety Damariay Drew due to a knee injury requiring surgery suffered in spring and lineman Aaron Cochran due to a sprained knee that shouldn’t force him to miss too much time.
There will certainly be guys waking up sore and beat up a bit when they finally get to wake up in their own beds again. But there were no injuries where players needed to be helped off the field or where they stayed down on the field for a long time. That is huge every week, but especially in week one.

Hawaii didn’t get off so lucky. In the fourth quarter, defensive lineman Kory Rasmussen, a fifth-year senior and one of the team leaders, was laid face down on the turf following a play. Rasmussen looked to have hurt his back, but was able to get up and walk off, albeit gingerly, under his own power. Senior safety Jamal Mayo was also hurt in the fourth quarter, when he collided with his own teammate.
