After nine seasons with the San Francisco Giants, it appears that starting pitcher Tim Lincecum is moving on. Multiple outlets are reporting that the 31-year-old Lincecum is closing in on a deal with the Los Angeles Angels, and that the Giants are out of the running.

It was never clear though, how interested the Giants were in his services. They had said publicly that they were looking at Lincecum for a possible bullpen role. However, after a strong showcase in Arizona, it appeared that Lincecum would get a chance to start somewhere. Still, with the struggles of Jake Peavy and Matt Cain at the back-end of the rotation, there were thoughts that Lincecum could eventually find his way into the Giants’ rotation at some point in the season, which is how he has said he wants to return.

Last week, the Giants and Angels, along with the Chicago White Sox, were considered to be the front-runners for his services. Barring a last minute change, it seems Lincecum will stay on the West Coast, this time in red instead of orange.

It will surely be an odd sight to see “The Freak” in another uniform. Lincecum, drafted in 2006 out of the University of Washington, broke into the big leagues in 2007. He would go on to win the Cy Young award in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Perhaps what he’ll be remembered for most was his dominance throughout the 2010 playoffs, spearheading a staff that led the organization to its first world championship since 1954. He threw 8 innings of 1 run ball in the deciding Game 5 vs the Texas Rangers, a team he will see a lot of now in the AL West.

The Angels will not be playing the Giants this season. However, in June, they will be visiting Oakland to play the Athletics. No contract figures have been released, and neither Lincecum nor the Angels have confirmed the deal yet. Stay tuned for updates.
