Play of the Week: Jake Peavy Keeps Flashing the Leather

Jake Peavy may not be the best pitcher in a rotation anymore, but he has played some great defense on the mound through this young season. He had the play of the week three weeks ago, and had another similar play on Saturday.

Peavy was in a jam in the second inning Saturday. He allowed a leadoff walk to Chris Herrmann, and the next batter, Brandon Drury, reached on a Matt Duffy error. Chris Owings followed with a double, driving in Herrmann and leaving runners on second and third with no one out. Nick Ahmed struck out for the first out of the inning, and opposing pitcher Patrick Corbin stepped up with a chance to help his own cause.

On an 0-2 count, Corbin squared around to bunt. Corbin got some air under the bunt, giving the defense a chance to make a tough, but spectacular play. It was Peavy who took advantage. He spring off the mound, quick as a cat, and went into a slide to get a glove on the line drive bunt. He made the clean catch, forcing Drury and Owings to hold their spots.

Still in a jam, Peavy got the next batter, Jean Segura, for the final out on a comebacker. During one of his best starts of the season, Peavy went six strong innings, giving up only a run. The strikeout of Ahmed, the first out of the second, started a string of 15 of the next 17 batters being retired. This great play helped Peavy out.
