Hitter of the Week: Joe Panik

It was a rough week for the offense as a whole. The lineup (not including pitchers) hit .237 during the past seven games, but were just good enough to pick up those wins. Joe Panik was the one that came up with the most big hits for the Giants.

Panik only hit .222 in the week (6-27), but he hit two massive home runs that proved to be the difference in two separate games. On Thursday in the fifth inning, Panik took Diamondbacks’ ace Zack Greinke deep for a two-run blast, which were the third and fourth runs in a 4-2 Giants’ win as Greinke was hung with his first loss against the Giants.

On Friday, Panik was back at it again, this time against Shelby Miller. In the sixth inning, with runners on second and third, Panik crushed a Miller pitch just inside the right field foul pole, the only runs the Giants would pick up in a 3-1 victory.

Panik also drove in the first run on Saturday, bringing Denard Span home after he opened the game with a triple.

Besides the run-scoring hits, Panik scored four times, and walked more than he struck out (five walks, four strikeouts). On the downside, he grounded into four of the Giants’ 14 double plays this past week.

Span also had a nice week, collecting nine hits in 27 at-bats, including a four-hit day on Saturday. Kelby Tomlinson thrived in his limited times, picking up four hits in six at-bats.
