Hitter of the Week: Brandon Belt

Brandon Belt’s emergences continues, and he has been one of baseball’s most disciplined hitters through the first month or so of the year. May has been kind to Belt so far.

In seven games last week, Belt racked up 11 hits in 24 at-bats, including a double, two triples, and a home run. He also worked seven walks and struck out three times in 31 plate appearances, a 9.7 percent strikeout rate. His slash-line during those seven games was an outstanding .458/.581/.792.

Of course, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for Belt, as he had a few baserunning blunders that may have taken some runs off the board for the Giants. It’s hard to complain too much about that when Belt has taken some great at-bats all season long.

On the year, Belt’s .452 on-base percentage is second in baseball and his 26 walks taken are third. His 1.37 walks per strikeout (26 walks, 19 strikeouts) also ranks third in the game, a complete turnaround from his numbers entering the season (499 strikeouts, 200 walks, .40 walks per strikeout).

Honorable mentions can be given to Kelby Tomlinson (who went 8-18 to break out of a deep early season slump) and Brandon Crawford (who hit two home runs and drove in nine).
