Oakland Raiders: Grading Out The Team’s 2016 Draft Class
By Kevin Saito
The two things that Shilique Calhoun brings to the table is his athleticism and versatility. Given that he was a big part of a Michigan State defense that was one of the best in the nation last year – helping lead them to the College Football Playoffs – the fact that he dropped to the third round makes him a fantastic value.
With 49 tackles –15 for a loss – and 10.5 sacks for the Spartans last season, Calhoun put up some numbers. He’s more than just a pass rusher though. He can stop the run, play the pass, and is versatile enough to play in a 3-4 or 4-3 defense. At 6’4”, 251 lbs., he’s a bit of a tweener, able to play defensive end or outside linebacker.
HC Jack Del Rio is looking forward to unleashing his new pass rusher.
"“He’s an end-of-the-line kind of guy. He’ll have versatility in that he can play the Sam linebacker for us or the Leo position, which is a defensive end.”"
Calhoun is confident in his ability to do whatever Del Rio and the coaching staff asks of him.
"“I definitely do believe that the Sam works for me,” Calhoun said. “If you want to put my hand in the dirt, that also works. I think I can play multiple roles and I can contribute to the team in many different ways.”"
It was a bit of a stroke of luck that Calhoun was available at 75, which makes him a fantastic value pick. He’s somebody who has the ability to step onto the field and contribute on day one. He’ll add depth and give the Raiders yet another pass rusher for a defensive front that is looking stronger and more fierce by the day.
