Hitter of the Week: Denard Span

It was mostly a tough week for the Giants’ offense, averaging less than four runs per game in the seven contests, but there were definitely some bright spots. Maybe none were bright than Denard Span, who has begun to come into his own in his new digs.

More from San Francisco Giants

Span was an on-base machine for the Giants in the past week. In seven games (six starts), Span reached base 16 times, seven via hit, eight via walk, and one via hit by pitch, for a Bondsian .571 on-base percentage. Unfortunately, Span only scored three times, and was stranded in scoring position five times as seemingly the entire lineup went cold at the exact same time.

After a really slow start to his Giants’ tenure, during which he slashed .224/.250/.327 in his first 12 games, Span is beginning to look more and more like the Span that was a mainstay at the top of the Washington Nationals’ order. He’s bumped his slash-line up to .261/.350/.362 for the season.

Also deserving a bit of recognition are Matt Duffy (who’s turned things around after a miserable slump to begin the year, hitting .417 last week), Angel Pagan (who drove in a team-leading six runs), and Gregor Blanco (who had six hits this past week, half of which were triples).
