Giant Killer of the Week: Nolan Arenado

There were a lot of players that could have earned this honor, including the Dodgers’ Enrique Hernandez (two home runs against Madison Bumgarner, five total RBI), Kenta Maeda (seven sparkling innings on Sunday), and Carlos Gonzalez (two doubles, a triple, four RBI), but it’s become pretty much guaranteed that anytime the Giants and the Rockies meet, Nolan Arenado is going to be a Giant killer. This week was no exception.

In three games, Arenado picked up six hits, including a pair of doubles and a pair of home runs, and drove in 10 runs. He was mostly quiet on Tuesday against Samardzija, picking up one hit, a run-scoring single, in four at-bats. He exploded on Tuesday, hitting a pair of home runs among his four hits, and driving in seven of the Rockies’ 11 runs. In the series finale, he greeted reliever Chris Heston to a ballgame by hitting a double with the bases loaded, driving in a pair of runs amidst a nine-run inning for the Rockies. That was his only hit on the day in five plate appearances, but he made it count.

This is nothing new for Arenado, who made the Giants his personal whipping boys in 2015. In 19 games last season, Arenado crushed 10 home runs, including two multi-home run games, hit six doubles, and drove in 24 runs. His triple-slash line was an otherworldly .333/.390/.840.
