Week 12 vs. Carolina Panthers

As the Raiders run through the gauntlet of the second half of their 2016 season, they’re going to run into Cam Newton and the Panthers in Week Twelve.

Obviously, the Panthers lost last season’s Super Bowl to Denver and that stifling defense, but Newton seemed almost superhuman at times last season in guiding Carolina to a 15-1 regular season record and was the head of the league’s top ranked offense.

  • In Carolina, the Raiders will be facing an offense that can beat you in a number of different ways. They were twenty-fourth in passing yardage, but third in passing game scoring with Newton tossing 35 touchdowns. Their running game led the league in attempts and scoring, and was second in yards from scrimmage.

The game against the Panthers is going to be a fantastic measuring stick for this Oakland defense. The Raiders’ run defense is going to be tested heavily by Jonathan Stewart – who led the team with 989 yards and six scores on the ground last season. But they’ll also need to account for Newton who was second on the team in rushing with 636 yards, but first on the team with 10 touchdowns.
The Raiders had a devil of a time in covering tight ends last season, getting burned relentlessly. And against Carolina, they’re going to be squaring off with a really good one in Greg Olsen who led the Panthers with 1,104 receiving yards and seven scores.

Offensively, the Raiders will be matched up against a Panthers defense that was pretty good, ranking sixth in the league. It’s a defense that can get after the quarterback and really shut down a team’s running game. They’re not too shabby against the pass either. Oakland’s offense is going to need to be on point to find the holes in this Carolina defense.

The matchup with the Panthers is going to be a good one to watch and will be a good gauge of just how this Raiders team fares against top level opposition.
