It was quite the opening week for the San Francisco Giants, who sit alone atop the National League West with a 5-2 record. They opened with two straight wins against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday and Tuesday, but fell in the series finale on Wednesday. They traveled back to the Bay to open their home schedule on Thursday against their nemeses, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and proceeded to take three out of four games in the set. A bobbled grounder on rain-soaked turf separated them from a four-game sweep of Los Angeles.

The offense shined for the Giants, as the team scored an MLB-leading 43 runs in seven games, while hitting 14 home runs and collecting 64 hits, both second-best in baseball. They exploded for 12 runs twice, added nine runs another time, and came back from four-or-more run deficits twice. The pitching was none too shabby either, as the Giants held opponents to three runs or less in five of the seven games.

The two losses were by a combined two runs, and both were definitely winnable games for the Giants, but it’s hard to be unhappy about a 5-2 start. Let’s take a moment to recognize some standout players and moments from the week that was.
