Second Round (Pick #37): C Nick Martin, Notre Dame

Much like his brother, Zack Martin, Nick Martin has offensive line flexibility and will play inside at the next level. Calling him a Pro Bowler before he has even been drafted can be nonsense, but he is in a good place to compete much like his older brother.

49ers allowed 53 sacks last season and the quarterbacks felt the heat. That has to get fixed. With the possibility of Anthony Davis coming out of retirement, he should be able to regain the right tackle position rather than be moved inside to compensate for the loss of Alex Boone, and the dreadful play of Marcus Martin. Only 20 years old when drafted by he 49ers, the former USC guard Martin has adapted horribly at the next level. Defenders are blowing by and he’s getting ran over at center. Daniel Kilgore was stellar before his broken leg, but the full ability may never be there again.

With some health, strength, and NFL I.Q., the Notre Dame offensive lineman would boost Kelly’s offense and keep his quarterback safe.

Marcus Martin can return to his natural position of guard and play the right side, and potential future 49er offensive lineman, Ted Larsen, could be on his way after a reported interest between the two. Larsen would fill in on the left side after helping the Arizona Cardinals offensive line in recent years.
