Game 4: #11 Arizona St. Sun Devils vs. #6 Oregon St. Beavers

The slate of games on Wednesday wrapped up with the Sun Devils and Beavers, who provided the most competitive game of the day, although that’s not really saying all that much.

More from Cal Bears

Both teams got out of the gates slowly, as a Beavers’ three-pointer was the only scoring in the first two-and-a-half minutes. Scoring opened up a little afterwards, and Oregon State jumped out to an early 9-2 lead at the first half, getting three balls from three different shooters. The run continued and soon the lead was into double digits.

Arizona State battled back and got back within five points during the half, but didn’t have the firepower to keep up with the Beavers, who entered the locker room with a 32-23 lead. In the second half, Arizona State found themselves down big early, but jumped back into the mix and cut the lead down to seven. But again, ASU just didn’t have the firepower to push any closer. The Beavers stretched the lead out back into double-digits, and while ASU continued to fight, it just wasn’t enough as they fell 75-66.

Oregon State was able to hold off the Sun Devils, despite getting just 10 points from their leading scorer, Gary Payton II, and having their second-leading scorer, Tres Tinkle, miss the game with a right foot injury. It would be a tough task to beat the third-seeded Bears under the same circumstances. Tinkle is still listed as day-to-day, but he entered the arena on a scooter and looks like he could be a longshot to play on day two.

Cal and Oregon State will have a chance to settle their season series on a neutral court after each team won on their home court in the regular season. Oregon State is 7-8 on the year away from home, while Cal is 4-9.
