San Francisco Giants: Revisiting Some Past Top Ten Prospects
2010 Baseball America Organizational Rankings
The 2010 rankings were essentially a preview of the current team — the World Series core. Composed in November of 2009, this was before any of the wonderful October moments Giants fans have been spoiled by over the last six years.
On the list are quite a few familiar names. Posey, Madison Bumgarner and Brandon Crawford were all listed, and have all been integral parts of the many World Series titles that have been won by the squad since 2010.
Though Crawford may not be the nationally ranked stud that Posey and Bumgarner are, he is coming off the best season of his blossoming career, winning a Golden Glove and Silver Slugger award last season.

As we look deeper into the list though, we see there are some less flashy names. Zack Wheeler was traded to the New York Mets in exchange for Carlos Beltran — who turned out to be nothing more than a short rental that didn’t truly pay off. Thomas Neal was traded to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for shortstop Orlando Cabrera, another short-term asset.
Dan Runzler was a hot prospect, who went through every level of baseball in the 2009 season, and pitched for the 2010 championship team. Sadly, he wasn’t able to maintain that level of success and was released in 2013. Tommy Joseph was a catching prospect who was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for Hunter Pence, who has certainly made an impact with the team.
Roger Kieschnick was the Ryan Lollis of the past, playing a handful of games when needed in the outfield. He was released in 2014, and has bounced around the league ever since.
Ehire Adrianza has been a steady bench infielder, capable of coming in late in games to run or field well, but he certainly hasn’t been anything amazing. Francisco Peguero was a long-time top prospect who just never wowed the Giants in the majors and was released in 2013. He has since signed with the Baltimore Orioles.
Overall, the 2010 class is considered a success. It’s not hard to declare it as such, because the team’s best hitter, pitcher, and defender were all a part of it. Not every prospect turned out well or amazed at the Major League level, but just the trio of Posey, Bumgarner, and Crawford made this class one the Giants will surely never forget.
