2016 NFL Combine Wrap-Up: Stanford Cardinal
Blake Martinez, Linebacker
Measurables:
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 237 lbs.
Arm Length: 31-5/8″
Hand Size: 10-7/8″
Martinez is slightly on the thin side for an inside linebacker, but has room to add a little bit more weight and become thicker, like, say, a Scooby Wright or Reggie Ragland. His arms are about an inch below average in length for the position, but his hands are huge, the second-biggest of all linebackers.
Drills (position rankings):
Bench Press (225 pounds): 22 (5/28)
40-Yard Dash: 4.71 (11/31)
Vertical Leap: 28.5″ (29/32)
Broad Jump: 113″ (23/32)
3-Cone Drill: 6.98 (2/16)
20-Yard Shuttle: 4.20 (3/20)
Martinez was below average in the broad jump and vertical leap, finishing near the bottom in both, but had impressive showings in the strength, speed, and quickness departments. His 22 reps on the bench press were fifth among all linebackers, but third among inside backers. His 40-yard dash was 11th overall, but again jumped to third among inside guys. The three-cone drill and 20-yard shuttle were both good drills for the Stanford product.
Next: Combine Wrap-Up for the Cal Bears
In position drills, Martinez looked smooth and well-coached, basically what you’d expect from a Stanford guy. He also presented himself well in the interviews, showing himself to a funny guy, but very serious in his preparations as a player. Added with his on-field performances at Stanford (over 100 tackles in both of the last two seasons, five interceptions), whatever NFL team picks Martinez is getting a very solid young man.
