2016 NFL Combine Wrap-Up for the Cal Bears
Kenny Lawler, Wide Receiver
Measurables:
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 203 lbs.
Arm Length: 33-3/8″
Hand Size: 10-1/2″
Lawler’s measurables were pretty good, with an above average height and a heavier weight than his official 2015 weight. He’s put on eight pounds to bump up to 203 pounds, putting him right at the average weight for receivers in the Combine. His arms are the fifth-longest in the group, and his hands, always a big focal point for him, are the second-biggest.
Drills (position ranking):
40-Yard Dash: 4.64 (29/36)
Vertical Leap: 31″ (36/41)
Broad Jump: 111″ (40/40)
3-Cone Drill: 7.13 (22/27)
20-Yard Shuttle: 4.20 (11/27)
60-Yard Shuttle: 11.28 (5/19)
Lawler didn’t have a great showing in the athleticism drills, not participating in the bench press, finishing in the bottom half of receivers in the 40-yard dash, three-cone drill, and vertical, as well as finishing last out of the 40 wideouts that made the broad jump. He did do pretty well in the 60-yard shuttle, however. From watching him in games, that’s not too surprising. He has never been the biggest, fastest, or most athletic player on the field, but made up for it in an innate ability to simply catch the ball.
In the gauntlet drills, testing a receiver’s ability to catch the ball on the run and turn their body, Lawler had the second-best time behind Arizona’s State D.J. Foster. He also showed a strong ability to run down deep passes, something he did well junior year at Cal. That ability to make catches, including some circus catches than an average receiver wouldn’t make, should outweigh the low drill scores.
