Cal Bears wide receiver Bryce Treggs was never the team’s number-one option, but he enjoyed a very prolific career at the university.

As the 2016 NFL Draft approaches, Golden Gate Sports will profile some of the California Golden Bears’ potential draft picks. Everyone knows about quarterback Jared Goff, who declared for the draft a year early and will almost certainly be one of the first few players off the board when the 81st annual draft kicks off on April 28th. But the Bears, who finished 8-5 this past season and beat Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl, have other intriguing prospects. The fourth profiled here is wide receiver Bryce Treggs.

St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, California has produced some great college recruits over the past few years (including 2016 Cal recruit Traveon Beck), and Treggs is one of the best. Coming out of high school in 2012, Treggs was given five stars by Scout, and four stars by ESPN, Prepstars, and Rivals. Offers came flooding in from Stanford, Notre Dame, UCLA, and Arizona State (just to name a few), but the young man committed to Cal.

Treggs came in and made an immediate impact in his true freshman season as a Golden Bear in 2012. In nine games, including eight starts, Treggs caught 21 passes (third on the team) for 216 yards and a score. He exploded in 2013 as a sophomore, catching a team-leading 77 passes, including a career-high 13 grabs in week one against Northwestern. He racked up 751 yards to finish second on the team. His sophomore campaign earned him an honorable mention for the All-Pac-12 team, as well as the Academic All-Pac-12 team.

In 2014, Treggs’ junior season, his production dropped a bit as Cal really began to spread the ball around on offense. He was one of three Bears’ receivers to catch at least 50 passes on the season, finishing second on the squad with 52 grabs. His 583 yards were fourth on the team, and his six touchdowns were tied for second.

2015 saw a number of career-bests for Treggs. Though the 45 catches he recorded were his lowest since his freshman year, the 956 yards led the team and were the best of his Cal tenure. He also set career-highs with 21.2 yards per reception and seven touchdowns. Treggs ended his Cal career on a high note, finishing his senior season with three consecutive 100-plus yards and one-touchdown games, including setting a career-best with 147 receiving yards against Arizona State, and 143 receiving yards against Air Force in his first Bowl game. He earned another All-Pac-12 honorable mention nod.

Treggs’ father, Brian Treggs, is also a Cal alumni, and one of the best at that. The two had a very special moment during the younger Treggs’ senior season. During Cal’s contest with USC, Brian was honored on the field for his induction into the Cal Hall of Fame. On the very next play after the short ceremony, Bryce caught a touchdown pass.

Treggs was never the number-one option at Cal, playing behind Keenan Allen, Chris Harper, and Kenny Lawler during his four years. However, during his three seasons playing with Goff, no receiver caught more passes from the star quarterback. Treggs caught 156 balls from Goff, 21 more than second-place Lawler. Overall, Treggs exits Cal third in school history in receptions with 195, and fourth in yards with 2,506. His 15 touchdowns are tied for eighth on the school’s list, matching the total his father posted during his time at Cal.

At 6’0″ and 185 pounds, Treggs has the look of a slot receiver. He is extremely similar in stature to some prolific NFL slot receivers, including Julian Edelman (6’0″, 195 pounds), Randall Cobb (5’11”, 190 pounds), and Danny Amendola (5’11”, 185 pounds). Treggs runs very sharp routes and has great speed, being clocked at 4.34 before the 2015 season, as well as running 10.8 seconds in the 100 meters as a track standout at St. John Bosco. During his four years at Cal, he has played inside and outside as a receiver, and is certainly not afraid of going over the middle to make a catch.

Treggs isn’t as highly-touted as his teammate Lawler, who left Cal a year early and figures to go on the second day of the draft, in the second or third round. Instead, Treggs will likely go on day three, somewhere between the fifth and seventh round. No matter when Treggs goes, or if he goes at all, he’s got the skill set to make it at the next level.

Here’s a highlight reel from Treggs’ senior season in 2015.
